The Red Hut Café South Lake Tahoe

The short answer: The Red Hut Café is a family-run breakfast and lunch diner that has been serving waffles in South Lake Tahoe since 1959. There are two Red Huts in South Lake Tahoe, the original on Highway 50 at 2749 Lake Tahoe Blvd. and one in the Ski Run Center at 3660 Lake Tahoe Blvd., plus one on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada, and one in Carson City. The Tahoe locations are listed as open 6 am to 2 pm, breakfast and lunch only. The menu is classic diner food, led by the bacon waffle. It is walk-in, so expect a line on weekends and ski mornings.

Opening years come from the café's history on Tahoe.com and the Record-Courier. Some older listings still say "five locations"; the Reno one has closed.

Which Red Hut should you pick?

• For the history: the Highway 50 original, the small diner where it all started.
• Before Heavenly: the Ski Run Center location. Ski Run Boulevard leads up to Heavenly's California Lodge, and Heavenly Village and the gondola are under a mile east.
• If you're staying in Stateline or heading up Kingsbury Grade: the Kingsbury location, on the Nevada side, is closest to the casinos and to Heavenly's Nevada base areas.
• If you're coming from Carson Valley or Carson City: the Carson City location saves you the drive over the pass.

The menu is American diner food in big portions, and it has changed little over the years. What's on it, based on the café's own descriptions and Visit Lake Tahoe's listings:

• Waffles: the reason the place exists. The bacon waffle has strips of bacon cooked right into it. The coconut and pecan waffles are the other classics.
• Pancakes: big, fluffy stacks, with seasonal specials.
• Omelets: made to order with fillings of your choice.
• Biscuits and gravy: one of the most ordered plates.
• Lunch: burgers, sandwiches and salads.
• Daily specials: check the board when you sit down.

This is one of the most common searches about the Red Hut, and we want to be straight about it: we could not find a current official menu with prices online. Third-party menu sites show prices that may be years old, and prices at Tahoe restaurants have risen a lot in the last few years. Treat any online price as a rough guide and check the menu in the restaurant. We have left prices off this page rather than guess.

Red Hut hours and the best time to go

The Tahoe locations are listed as open 6 am to 2 pm. There is no dinner. Some older listings mention dinner at the Ski Run location, but current listings show it closing at 2 pm, so don't plan on an evening meal there.

• Weekdays before 8 am: the best chance of walking straight in.
• Weekends and holidays, 8 to 11 am: the busiest stretch. Expect a line, sometimes out the door.
• Ski-season weekends: the Ski Run and Kingsbury locations fill up with skiers on their way to Heavenly.
• Late morning on a weekday: often quieter, and you can still order breakfast.
• Counter seats: if there are only one or two of you, ask about the counter; it often turns over faster than tables.

The history: from a donut shop to 65-plus years of waffles

Red Hut's story, as the café tells it, starts in 1959, when an old building at Stateline called The Donut Shop was moved into South Lake Tahoe and opened as the first Red Hut Waffle Shop. The Gardner family bought the business in 1984. In 1990 they opened Red Hut Nevada on lower Kingsbury Grade, copying the look and feel of the original, and in 2009 a third Tahoe location opened in the remodeled Ski Run Center. Carson City followed in 2011 and Reno in 2012, according to the Record-Courier; the Reno one has since closed.

In April 2015, travel and food writer Larry Olmsted featured the Red Hut in a USA Today column, calling it a quintessential greasy spoon, as the Record-Courier reported. The same article lists jalapeño bacon among the house specialties. The draw has always been the same: a no-frills diner, big plates, and waffles that haven't changed much since the Waffle Shop days.

What we'd order

• First visit: the bacon waffle. It's the dish the place is known for.
• Cold morning or before skiing: biscuits and gravy with eggs.
• Not in a sweet mood: an omelet with hash browns.
• Sharing: order a waffle for the table alongside a savory plate. Portions are large.

Tips for first-timers

• Go early. It's walk-in, and the only real strategy is to beat the rush.
• Pick the location by your plans, not by reputation; the menu is essentially the same.
• Come hungry, or plan to share.
• Check hours on holidays by phone, since the café's website was down when we checked.
• Parking at the small original fills when the line is long; carpool if you can.

Getting to each Red Hut

All three Tahoe locations are on or just off Highway 50, the main road through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, so they are easy to find.

• Highway 50 original (2749 Lake Tahoe Blvd.): on the main road through the middle of South Lake Tahoe, west of Ski Run Boulevard. If you are coming from the West Shore or from Emerald Bay on Highway 89, it is the first Red Hut you reach after the "Y," where Highways 89 and 50 meet.
• Ski Run Center (3660 Lake Tahoe Blvd.): at the bottom of Ski Run Boulevard, in the shopping center on the corner. From Heavenly Village, head west on Highway 50.
• Kingsbury Grade (229 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline, NV): just up Kingsbury Grade (Nevada State Route 207) from Highway 50, past the casinos on the Nevada side.
• Carson City (4385 S. Carson St.): on the main road through the south end of Carson City, handy if you are driving to Tahoe from Carson Valley or the Reno airport by way of Highway 50.

In winter, allow extra time. Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Kingsbury Grade itself both see chain controls in storms. Check Caltrans QuickMap on the California side and NVRoads on the Nevada side.

Red Hut in winter vs. summer

Ski season

From the time Heavenly opens until spring, the Red Hut is where a lot of skiers eat before the lifts. That makes the Ski Run and Kingsbury locations busiest between about 7 and 9 am on weekends and holidays, and again on powder days. If you want waffles and first chair, go at 6 am when the doors open, or go after skiing for a late lunch before the 2 pm close.

Summer

In summer the rush shifts later, and the lines peak mid-morning on weekends when beachgoers and day-trippers arrive. An early breakfast pairs well with Emerald Bay, where State Parks recommends arriving at the Vikingsholm parking lot before 9 am. From the Highway 50 Red Hut, Emerald Bay is about 12 miles out Highway 89.

Red Hut for families and groups

It's a casual diner, and families with kids are a big part of the crowd. A few things help with a group:

• Call ahead with a big group and ask which location can seat you soonest.
• Send one person ahead to put your name in while the rest of the group parks.
• Order waffles to share for the table; one is a lot of food for a small child.
• Go on a weekday if you can. The difference in wait time between a Tuesday and a Saturday is large.

2. 8:30 am (winter): up the Heavenly Gondola from Heavenly Village, under a mile away.
3. 8:30 am (summer): drive 12 miles north on Highway 89 to Emerald Bay State Park, park before the lot fills, and walk down to Vikingsholm.

Breakfast on the North and West Shore

If you are staying on our side of the lake, you don't need to drive an hour for a good breakfast.
