None of that makes South Lake Tahoe the wrong choice, though. It still wins on casino nightlife, a tighter cluster of restaurants and shops within walking distance of each other, and Heavenly Mountain Resort’s gondola landing almost in the middle of town.

South Lake Tahoe also has the edge for travelers who want everything within a short walk, since its commercial core is simply denser than anything on the North Shore. Anyone whose trip centers on that kind of concentrated, walkable energy will likely be happier basing themselves south instead.

Once North Lake Tahoe wins out as the right side of the lake for a trip, the next decision is which town to actually base in, since the eight towns along this shoreline have genuinely different personalities.

Incline Village, NV, is the most upscale of the North Shore towns, set on the Nevada side where Washoe County, NV's lack of state income tax has long attracted second homeowners and full-time residents alike. Crystal Bay NV

Northstar California

Northstar California offers a different scale entirely, with 3,170 acres, 100 trails, and 20 lifts spread across the Martis Valley near Truckee. Owned by Vail Resorts and covered by the Epic Pass, it leans heavily intermediate, with well-groomed runs and one of the more developed terrain park systems in the region. The Village at Northstar adds on-site lodging, dining, and a beginner area right at the base, which makes it an easy resort to navigate with young kids in tow.

Palisades Tahoe

Getting to North Lake Tahoe is one of the clearest practical advantages over the South Shore, mostly thanks to its proximity to Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport sits roughly 35 to 50 minutes from most North Shore towns, compared to well over an hour to reach South Lake Tahoe from the same airport. Highway 80 runs the main route from Reno to Truckee, CA, where Highway 89 continues south to Tahoe City, CA, and Highway 267 branches off toward Northstar California and down to Kings Beach, CA. On the Nevada side, Highway 28 connects Incline Village, NV, and Crystal Bay, NV, directly to the rest of the North Shore, often via the Mount Rose Highway route up from South Reno rather than through Truckee at all.

Driving up from the Bay Area instead means a straight shot east on Highway 80 over Donner Summit, a route that runs anywhere from 3.5 to 5 hours depending on traffic and winter weather. Tire chains or all-weather tires become a real requirement on this drive between November and April, since Caltrans closes the summit or requires chains with little notice when storms move through.
