Staying in Tahoma
Tahoma is the southernmost West Shore community we cover, on CA-89 south of Homewood. Homes sit in thick pine forest on both sides of the highway, with very little traffic and no town center beyond a small market and a few places to eat (Tahoma restaurants lists them). For a full grocery run, stock up in Tahoe City on the way in.
The Placer–El Dorado county line runs through Tahoma, which is why lodging tax isn't the same at every home here: each quote shows the right one.
Sugar Pine Point and the lake
Sugar Pine Point State Park, on Tahoma's southern edge, has a long public shoreline, the Ehrman Mansion and forest trails; it hosted the Nordic events of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and its trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Meeks Bay is just south, and the small public beach at Chambers Landing is just north.
Winter
CA-89 is the only road along the West Shore. South of Tahoma it climbs past Emerald Bay, a stretch Caltrans often closes during and after storms, so in winter South Lake Tahoe can be a long way round. Tahoe City is the usual way in and out; carry chains.
