Best Time to Visit Lake Tahoe: A Month-by-Month Guide
Updated September 30, 2026 · 14 min read

September is the North Shore's sweet spot. July–August for swimming, late Sept–mid Oct for fall color, late Nov–April for skiing, and late fall or spring for quiet and value.
The short answer: September. It still feels like summer, the lake is still warm from August, and far fewer people are here than in July. If swimming is the point, come in July or August, but expect crowds and some risk of wildfire smoke. For fall color, aim for late September to mid-October. For skiing, come between late November and April. January through March is the deepest part of winter, and February is the snowiest month on record. For the quietest trip and usually the lowest rates, come between late October and early December, or in spring.
We manage 41 vacation homes around North Lake Tahoe, from Incline Village to Tahoma. Below is what each month is actually like on the North Shore. We use NOAA climate normals for the weather and UC Davis TERC measurements for the lake. Dated events are from the 2026 calendar or the 2026–27 season, so check the linked source before you book around them.
Lake Tahoe month at a glance
The temperatures, precipitation and snow figures are NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normals for Tahoe City, a lakeside station on the North Shore. Precipitation includes melted snow. Higher neighborhoods and the ski areas are colder and get more snow than the lakeshore.

Lake Tahoe month by month
January
January is full winter. NOAA's Tahoe City normals give an average high of 39.6°F and a low of 20.6°F, with 6.21 inches of precipitation (the wettest month) and 37.9 inches of snow. The lake is at its clearest in this season. UC Davis TERC measured winter clarity at 78.4 feet in 2025, and on a still morning you can see a long way down from the shore. The ski resorts are fully running. Holiday weekends are busy, and midweek after New Year's is noticeably calmer. Roads can close or need chains during storms, so leave slack in your travel days. Our Lake Tahoe winter guide has more on planning a winter trip. Days are short, so plan outdoor time for the middle of the day, when it's warmest. A house with a hot tub or a fireplace makes the long evenings part of the trip rather than something to get through.
Best for: skiing, snowshoeing, a snowed-in week by the fire. Skip if: you can't be flexible about storm days.
February
February is the snowiest month in NOAA's normals, with 41.3 inches in Tahoe City. Temperatures run a little higher than January, at 40.5°F and 21.1°F. The lake is near its coldest, since TERC reports the water is coldest in February and March. The winter festival calendar starts late in the month. SNOWFEST is scheduled for February 25 to March 7, 2027, with events in Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Olympic Valley, Truckee, Incline Village and Homewood. Holiday weekends in February draw the ski crowds, so book those dates early. Storms here tend to come in cycles, with several snowy days followed by clear, cold ones. Those clear days after a storm are what skiers wait for. If you're driving up from the Bay Area or flying into Reno, allow extra time and check road conditions before you leave.
Best for: powder days and a festive winter trip. Skip if: you want mild weather or bare trails.
March
March still brings real winter. The normals show 34.7 inches of snow and 4.95 inches of precipitation, but the days are longer and highs average 44.6°F. SNOWFEST runs through March 7, 2027. This is the low point for the water. In 2025 TERC recorded the lake's winter minimum of 41.4°F on March 16. Spring-break weeks can be busy on the slopes, and the deep snowpack usually keeps skiing good all month. Sunny days between storms are some of the best ski days of the year. Temperatures swing more in March. A cold storm can be followed by a sunny afternoon that feels close to spring. Pack for both, and expect snow to stay on the ground at lake level for much of the month. Lake walks on clear days are cold but very quiet.
Best for: spring skiing on a deep base. Skip if: you're hoping for lake days or hiking.
April
April is a transition month. The normal high climbs to 50.1°F, but the lakeshore still averages 14.0 inches of snow. Skiing typically carries into April, and lower trails start to melt out while higher ones stay snowbound. Events are thin. In 2026 the long-running WinterWonderGrass festival held only a free pop-up show at Palisades on April 18, according to the Mountain Democrat, so don't plan a trip around a spring festival without checking. This is one of the quiet seasons, and nightly rates are usually lower. Weather changes quickly in April. You can get a sunny, 50-degree afternoon and a snow shower in the same week. Pack layers, waterproof shoes and a warm jacket. It's a good month for a low-key stay, with long lunches, short lakeshore walks and a quiet house.
Best for: late-season skiing, quiet and value. Skip if: you need reliable sunshine or open high trails.
May
May averages 59.2°F highs and 33.9°F lows, and snow is nearly done at lake level (2.8 inches). The water is still cold, far too cold for most swimmers. Summer infrastructure starts to open. Sand Harbor's morning reservation requirement begins on May 15, and in 2026 the Incline Village Championship Course opened May 8. The weeks before Memorial Day are some of the quietest of the year. Mornings can be frosty, and higher trails may still hold snow. Late May is when the North Shore starts to wake up for summer. Memorial Day weekend brings the first real wave of visitors, and the weeks before it are the easy ones to book. Layers matter, because a warm afternoon can be followed by a near-freezing night, as the 33.9°F normal low shows.
Best for: quiet lakeside walks, early golf, lower rates. Skip if: you want to swim.
June
June turns dry, with 0.61 inches of precipitation and a normal high of 69.3°F, though lows still fall to 40.0°F. The lake warms through the month. In 2026 the free East Shore Express shuttle to Sand Harbor started running on June 21. IVGID's Mountain Course is typically open from Memorial Day. Early June is calmer, and the summer rush builds once schools let out. June has the longest days of the year, which makes it good for fitting a hike and a beach afternoon into the same day. Snow can linger on shaded, high-elevation trails early in the month, so check conditions before a big hike. Sand Harbor reservations are needed for the morning entry window, just as in July and August, so book it well before you arrive.
Best for: hiking, biking and long days before the peak. Skip if: you want warm water for swimming.
July
July is the warmest month on land (78.0°F high, 46.0°F low) and nearly rainless (0.17 inches). TERC measured the lake's average July surface temperature at 65.2°F in 2025, against a long-term July average of 65.3°F. Fireworks shows were held on July 4, 2026 in Incline Village and Tahoe City, both at 9:30 p.m. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival opened Macbeth at Sand Harbor on July 3, 2026. This is the busiest month, with full beaches, busy roads and the first real risk of wildfire smoke. If you're coming in July, book early, especially the week of the Fourth, and plan beach days around early starts. Evenings are cool enough for a jacket even on the hottest days. The Shakespeare season makes for an easy evening out, with gates at 5:30 p.m. and curtain at 7:30 p.m. in 2026.
Best for: swimming, boating, the Fourth. Skip if: you dislike crowds or need a last-minute booking.
August
August stays hot on land (77.4°F normal high) and brings the warmest water. TERC reports August is typically the warmest month for the lake, and in 2025 the daily surface temperature peaked at 72.8°F on August 12. The east shore tends to run warmer than the west, which helps at Sand Harbor. In 2026 the Shakespeare festival ran until August 23. The downside is smoke. In years with large fires in the Sierra, August is when haze is most likely, as it was during the 2021 Caldor Fire. Afternoons are the warmest part of the day for a swim, and shallow coves warm faster than open water. Keep an eye on air quality forecasts in the days before and during your trip, and have a plan B for smoky days, such as a short walk, a late breakfast or a day at the house.
Best for: the warmest swimming of the year. Skip if: smoke would ruin your trip or you have lung or heart conditions.
September
September is our pick. The normal high is still 70.4°F, rain is scarce (0.42 inches), and the lake holds much of its August warmth. Once Labor Day passes, the crowds thin quickly. In 2026 the East Shore Express ran through September 12, and Sand Harbor reservations stay in place through September 30, so plan your beach days the same way as in summer. Fall color starts to show from mid-September, according to Go Tahoe North. Nights are cold (40.5°F low), so homes with a hot tub earn their keep. The first half of the month still has the feel of summer. By the end, the evenings have turned autumnal. School calendars keep many families away, which is exactly why couples and groups of friends like it. September weekends still fill, so don't leave them late.
Best for: almost everything: swimming, hiking, biking, quiet. Skip if: you need school-holiday dates.
October
October brings crisp days (59.2°F high, 32.6°F low) and the first storms, with 1.89 inches of precipitation and some early snow (2.4 inches). The aspens peak in many years, since the fall-color window runs from mid-September to late October. In 2026 the Championship Course season ran to October 18, and the Mountain Course typically closes in early October. From October 15, dogs are allowed back at Sand Harbor on a leash no longer than six feet, under Nevada State Parks rules. Late October starts the quietest stretch of the year. October is a month for walking, not swimming. The morning light and the colors in the aspen groves are the draw. Early storms can bring a dusting of snow to higher trails, so check conditions and carry a warm layer. Many summer services have wound down by now, which is part of the quiet.
Best for: fall color, quiet trails, lower rates. Skip if: you want to swim or ski.
November
November is the in-between month. Highs average 47.7°F, and the lakeshore averages 3.21 inches of precipitation and 9.4 inches of snow. It's usually the quietest and best-value time to visit. Ski season starts late in the month. For 2026–27, Northstar and Mt. Rose are targeting November 20 openings and Palisades Tahoe November 25, according to ABC7. Openings depend on snow, so treat them as targets. Thanksgiving week is the exception to the quiet. Days are short and the weather is unpredictable, so November best suits people who are happy to settle into a house for a few days. Expect some cold, gray days and some clear, bright ones. If you want to ski, book with flexible plans and keep an eye on the resorts' own opening announcements.
Best for: a quiet cabin trip and early-season skiing if the snow comes. Skip if: you need guaranteed ski conditions.
December
December is wet and snowy, with 6.00 inches of precipitation and 36.2 inches of snow in the normals. Highs sit at 39.7°F, with lows around 20.7°F. Diamond Peak, in Incline Village, is targeting December 3, 2026 for opening. Early December stays quiet, but the Christmas and New Year's weeks are among the busiest of the whole year, so book them early. Storms can close roads, so keep chains in the car. The run-up to the holidays is one of the easier times to find open dates at short notice, if the snow cooperates. For a holiday stay, book as early as you can and plan for a full house: groceries, firewood and a plan for the storm days when nobody wants to drive anywhere. A home with a hot tub helps on those days.
Best for: early-season skiing and a snowy holiday. Skip if: you want the holidays without crowds.
Lake water temperature through the year
UC Davis's Tahoe Environmental Research Center tracks the lake year-round. Its State of the Lake Report 2026 gives the key figures:
- Coldest: February to March. In 2025 the winter low was 41.4°F on March 16.
- Warmest: August. In 2025 the daily peak was 72.8°F on August 12.
- July average: 65.2°F in 2025, close to the long-term July average of 65.3°F.
- East vs. west: the east shore, including Sand Harbor and the Incline side, tends to be warmer than the west.
In short, the lake is cool even at its warmest. Most people find it refreshing from late July through early September, and cold outside that window.
Ski season
Ski season on the North Shore generally runs from late November into April. For 2026–27, the target openings are Northstar and Mt. Rose on November 20 and Palisades Tahoe on November 25. Diamond Peak is targeting December 3. All of these depend on snow.
The deepest part of winter is January through March. NOAA's Tahoe City normals show 37.9 inches of snow in January, 41.3 in February and 34.7 in March, and December is close behind at 36.2. Holiday weeks and weekends are the busiest time on the slopes. Midweek in January and early March tend to be the calmest.
None of our homes are ski-in/ski-out. Many are a short drive from Diamond Peak or Mt. Rose. See our ski cabin rentals, the Diamond Peak guide for renters and Incline Village in winter.
Crowds, prices and shoulder seasons
The North Shore has two peaks and two quiet seasons:
- Busiest: July and August, the Fourth of July above all, plus the Christmas-to-New-Year's weeks and ski holiday weekends.
- Quietest: late October to early December, and spring from April to the weeks before Memorial Day.
Prices follow demand. Our own rates are usually lowest in spring and late fall, and highest in the peak weeks. Where you book matters too. We set our Airbnb prices 28% above our own site and our Vrbo prices 17% above, so booking direct is the cheapest way to stay in any of our homes. Each home page shows the saving for your dates. The details are in booking direct vs. Airbnb at Lake Tahoe.
Shoulder-season tip: search a few different weeks in May or late October. The difference in price from one week to the next can be bigger than you'd expect.
Fire season and smoke
Wildfire smoke is the main thing that can spoil a summer trip. Lake Tahoe sits in a basin ringed by mountains, and that shape makes it hard for smoke to clear once it arrives. During the 2021 Caldor Fire, the basin filled with smoke and air quality dropped sharply, as UPI reported at the time.
Smoke doesn't happen every summer, and it can clear quickly when the wind shifts. The risk is highest from mid-July through early fall. Some events plan for it. The Shakespeare festival at Sand Harbor, for example, may delay or cancel a performance if the Air Quality Index consistently exceeds or trends above 150, per its show page. If smoke would seriously affect your group, September after the first rains, or the fall shoulder season, is the safer bet.
Fall colors
Go Tahoe North puts the best fall foliage between mid-September and late October. Go Tahoe North also points to aspen groves at Page Meadows, Marlette Lake and Spooner Lake. Timing moves each year with temperature, so the first cold nights are a good signal.
The best time for...
- Swimming: late July through August, when the water is warmest. The east shore, including Sand Harbor, tends to be warmer.
- Skiing: January through March for the deepest snow, and late November to April for the full season.
- Hiking: late June through mid-October, once high trails melt out. September is the pick. See the East Shore Trail guide for an easy paved option.
- Fall color: mid-September to late October.
- Deals: spring and late fall, when our rates are usually lowest.
- Clear water: winter. TERC measured 78.4 feet of clarity in winter 2025, against 60.4 feet in summer and 69.2 feet for the year.
Where to stay in every season
Our 41 homes are all on the North Shore and West Shore. There are 20 in Incline Village, 6 in Kings Beach and 5 in Carnelian Bay. We also have 3 in Homewood, 2 each in Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista and Tahoma, and 1 in Crystal Bay. Here's how we'd match them to the seasons:
- Summer: Incline Village puts you near Sand Harbor and the East Shore Trail. For a house on the water, the Lakeside Luxe Retreat in Kings Beach is our one lakefront home.
- Winter: Incline is close to Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose, and a home with a hot tub makes a cold evening easy.
- Groups at any time of year: see our homes for large groups.
Whatever the month, booking on our site costs less than the same home on Airbnb or Vrbo. Search your dates to see what's open, or browse all our homes. If you're flying in, our guide to flying into Reno covers the trip up to the lake.
