In short

Diamond Peak is in town, gentler for beginners and looks over the lake; Mt. Rose is bigger and higher, with the expert Chutes. Most Incline groups ski both.

If you are staying in Incline Village, the short answer is this: ski Diamond Peak for beginners, kids, lake views and the shortest trip from your door, and ski Mt. Rose for bigger, higher, steeper terrain, including the expert-only Chutes. Diamond Peak has 655 acres in town; Mt. Rose has 1,200+ acres up the Mount Rose Highway, with Tahoe's highest base elevation. Mt. Rose also usually opens earlier: for the 2026–27 season it is targeting November 20, 2026, while Diamond Peak is targeting December 3, 2026. Most groups staying more than a couple of days end up skiing both.

Below is the side-by-side, then the details that decide it: snow and elevation, terrain, beginners, the drive, tickets and season length, with a verdict by skier type and a four-day plan for skiing both.

Snow and elevation

Elevation is the clearest difference between the two, and it matters more than any single season's snowfall total. Mt. Rose's base sits at 8,260 feet, which the resort calls Tahoe's highest and which the U.S. Forest Service also confirms. That is only 280 feet below Diamond Peak's summit at 8,540 feet. Mt. Rose's summit reaches 9,700 feet. Diamond Peak's base is at 6,700 feet.

We are not going to give you a snowfall head-to-head. Published average snowfall figures for both resorts vary from source to source, and quoting one number against another would be guessing. What you can count on is the elevation gap, which helps explain why Mt. Rose's target opening comes earlier and why the Forest Service describes its season as running into late April or early May.

The trade-off at Mt. Rose is wind. The same high, exposed position that helps it hold snow also makes it prone to wind holds, when lifts stop or delay opening in strong wind, as Wikipedia's entry on the resort notes. On a stormy, windy day, check lift status before you drive up.

Diamond Peak's answer to its lower base is snowmaking. The resort says about 75% of the mountain has snowmaking coverage, according to its history page, and it has added new TechnoAlpin fan guns for 2026–27 per its season update. Diamond Peak has its own storm-day catch: its upper-mountain lift, Crystal Express, needs 1.5 to 3+ hours of de-icing after storms, the resort explains on its "When will Crystal open?" page. So on the morning after a big storm, expect a slow start at the top of both mountains, for different reasons.

Terrain

Mt. Rose: bigger, and the Chutes

With 1,200+ acres and 70+ trails, Mt. Rose is nearly twice Diamond Peak's size, and half its terrain is rated advanced or expert (40% advanced, 10% expert). Its longest run is 2.5 miles. The lift network includes two high-speed six-packs, a high-speed quad, a fixed quad and a fixed triple, plus the Magic Dual Conveyor and the Little Mule conveyor for beginners, according to its mountain information page.

The Chutes are why strong skiers make the drive. Per the resort's Chutes page:

  • They are for experts only, with pitches up to 55 degrees and more than 1,000 vertical feet.
  • Access is through nine gates from the Northwest Express and Zephyr Express lifts.
  • The resort advises skiing with a partner and carrying avalanche gear.
  • Gates close for avalanche control work, poor snow or low visibility, so they are not guaranteed on any given day.

If someone in your group is planning a trip around the Chutes, build in a spare day in case the gates are closed when you first try.

Diamond Peak: glades, Crystal Ridge and lake views

Diamond Peak is smaller at 655 acres, but its vertical, 1,840 feet, is actually a little more than Mt. Rose's 1,800. Its character comes from trees and views: 28 named trails, more than 500 acres of gladed terrain and 13 named glades, according to the resort. Its best-known run, Crystal Ridge, was included in CNN Travel's list of the World's 100 Best Ski Runs, and the upper mountain looks out over Lake Tahoe. Six chairlifts serve the mountain: Lakeview Quad, Schoolhouse, Red Fox, Lodgepole Quad, Crystal Express and Ridge. For a lift-by-lift walk-through, see our Diamond Peak ski resort guide.

For an advanced skier, Diamond Peak is a satisfying day or two. For an expert who wants sustained steep terrain, Mt. Rose has more of it.

Beginners and kids

Both mountains are good places to learn, and the rankings agree. ZRankings ranks Diamond Peak first and Mt. Rose second among Tahoe resorts for beginners. By the published terrain mix, Mt. Rose has a slightly higher beginner share (20% vs 18%), but Diamond Peak has far more intermediate terrain (46% vs 30%), which is where a new skier goes next.

Diamond Peak lessons are split by age: the Child Ski Center for ages 3 to 6, youth lessons for 7 to 12, adult lessons for 13 and up, and private lessons by request, per its lessons page. New for 2026–27 are 2.5-hour group lessons, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Mt. Rose lessons include Rosebuds for ages 4 to 12 and the Kidz at Rose program, per its lesson programs page.

What tips it for families staying in Incline:

  • Diamond Peak is in town, with a free shuttle, so a tired five-year-old is a short ride from the house rather than a mountain highway away.
  • Kids 6 and under ski free at Diamond Peak; at Mt. Rose, a Tyke ticket (5 and under) is $20 for the 2026–27 season.

Views and vibe

Diamond Peak is owned by IVGID, Incline Village's general improvement district, and opened in 1966 as Ski Incline before being renamed in 1987. It feels like a community hill: smaller crowds, families, and the lake in view from the upper runs. Mt. Rose feels more like a high-alpine mountain, with a bigger footprint and more exposed terrain, and it bills itself as the closest ski resort to Reno. If the lake view is the point of your trip, Diamond Peak delivers it on almost every upper-mountain run.

Getting there from Incline Village and Reno

Diamond Peak is at 1210 Ski Way in Incline Village. General parking is free, preferred slope-side parking is $30 on weekends and $35 on holidays, and a free shuttle runs two routes: a Blue route with morning pickups around Incline Village and returns from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m., and a Green route from the Hyatt from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., per its getting here page. From Reno-Tahoe airport it is about 30 miles via NV-431.

Mt. Rose describes itself as "10 minutes from Incline Village" and "25 minutes from Reno/Tahoe International Airport" on its getting here page. Those times assume clear roads. The resort sits on NV-431, the Mount Rose Highway, which runs 24.4 miles between Incline Village and Reno and crosses the 8,911-foot Mt. Rose Summit, according to Wikipedia's route entry. From Incline, you climb steadily up that highway to reach the resort. Third-party guides report that parking at Mt. Rose is free; confirm on the resort's site for the current season.

Winter driving on NV-431. When chain controls are in effect on the Mt. Rose Highway, chains are required unless you are in a 4WD or AWD vehicle with snow tires, as News 4 reported when the rule took effect. Before you drive, check nvroads.com or call 511 for current conditions. On a storm day, budget much more than 10 minutes, or stay at Diamond Peak. Our guide to flying into Reno for North Lake Tahoe covers rental cars and the airport drive.

Tickets: how to pay less at each

We don't list day-ticket prices here, because both resorts change them through the season. Check each resort's site for your dates. Here is how to pay less at each for 2026–27.

Mt. Rose

  • Buy online, early. Mt. Rose uses dynamic pricing, and online purchases need to be made by midnight the day before you ski, per its lift tickets page. Waiting until the morning costs you the online rate.
  • Tyke tickets for kids 5 and under are $20.

Diamond Peak

  • Buy online for the best pricing, per its tickets page.
  • New 2- and 3-day Flex Passes suit a long weekend or a split week.
  • Groups of 15 or more can get up to 20% off.
  • Kids 6 and under and seniors 80 and over ski free.
  • IVGID Picture Pass rates are not for vacation guests. They are for owners of Incline Village and Crystal Bay parcels and long-term leaseholders, per the IVGID deals page. Plan on regular online pricing.

Season length

For 2026–27, Mt. Rose is targeting an opening on November 20, 2026, according to ABC7's list of Tahoe opening dates. The Forest Service describes its typical season as running from mid-November to late April or early May. Diamond Peak is targeting Thursday, December 3, 2026, and says it typically opens in the first or second week of December; it has not published a closing date. If your trip is in November, early December or late spring, Mt. Rose is the safer bet. For the heart of winter, both are open, and opening dates always depend on snow and temperatures.

Ski both: a four-day North Shore plan

The two mountains complement each other, and a four-day trip based in Incline Village fits both without long drives. This is a template; move days around to match the forecast.

  1. Day 1: arrive and ski Mt. Rose. If you land at Reno-Tahoe early and roads are clear, Mt. Rose sits on NV-431 on your way to Incline. Buy tickets online by midnight the night before. Check into the house in the afternoon.
  2. Day 2: Diamond Peak. Take the free shuttle or drive to the free lot. Kids go to their lessons, or into the new 9:30 a.m. group session; stronger skiers head up Crystal Express for Crystal Ridge and the glades. Home for the hot tub by late afternoon.
  3. Day 3: back to Mt. Rose, or the Chutes day. Experts try the Chutes if gates are open; everyone else takes the bigger intermediate terrain. If a windy storm is forecast, swap this day with day 4 and check lift status before driving up.
  4. Day 4: a half day at Diamond Peak. Use a 2- or 3-day Flex Pass to cover days 2 and 4, ski the morning, and leave the afternoon for the lake or packing.
