Snow on the docks and peaks around Lake Tahoe in winter
In short

Winter in Incline Village means Diamond Peak in town, Mt. Rose up the hill, snowshoeing at Tahoe Meadows, chain controls on NV-431, and red or green street-parking days.

Incline Village in winter is a small ski town on the Nevada shore of the lake. Diamond Peak is in town and opens Thursday, December 3, 2026, conditions permitting. Mt. Rose, which has the highest base elevation at Tahoe, is up the Mt. Rose Highway. Off the slopes you can snowshoe at Tahoe Meadows, sled at the golf course driving range (not at Diamond Peak), walk Sand Harbor in the snow, or swim indoors at the Rec Center. Two rules matter most: chain controls on the Mt. Rose Highway, and red or green street-parking days in Incline and Crystal Bay from October 1.

Skiing: Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose

Diamond Peak

Diamond Peak is Incline Village's own ski area. According to Diamond Peak, the 2026-27 season is planned to open on Thursday, December 3, 2026, conditions permitting. The mountain has 655 acres and 1,840 vertical feet. New for this season are longer beginner lessons and new TechnoAlpin snowmaking.

Getting there, from Diamond Peak's parking page:

  • General parking is free.
  • Preferred parking costs $30 on weekends and $35 on peak days (2026-27).
  • Free shuttles run on two routes, Blue and Green. Check whether a route passes near where you're staying.

For more on skiing it from a rental home, see our Diamond Peak ski guide for renters.

Mt. Rose

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is up the Mt. Rose Highway (NV-431) between Incline and Reno. Its base is at 8,260 feet, the highest base elevation at Tahoe, according to Mt. Rose. That height also means the drive up can be slow in a storm (see the driving section below).

Which one suits your group? Our Mt. Rose vs. Diamond Peak comparison helps you choose. For the bigger resorts around the lake, see our Lake Tahoe in winter guide.

Staying for a ski trip

None of our homes are ski-in/ski-out. You'll drive or take the shuttle to the lifts. What you get instead is a whole house in town: room to dry gear, a kitchen for early breakfasts, and at some homes a hot tub at the end of the day. Our ski cabin rentals page lists the homes that work best for a ski week, and each one shows the direct price for your dates. That price is lower than the same home on Airbnb, where our prices are set 28% higher.

Sledding: where you can and can't

This is the question we're asked most in winter, and the answer surprises people.

You can't sled at Diamond Peak. According to Diamond Peak's safety policies, tubing, sledding and snow play are not allowed anywhere on the resort's property, including after the lifts close. That includes the slopes near the base lodge.

Where you can: Diamond Peak points people to the driving range at the Championship Golf Course, 955 Fairway Blvd. It isn't a groomed sledding hill. It has natural snow, so it depends on the weather, and you need to bring your own sled.

A few tips:

  • Buy or pack a sled before you arrive. Don't assume the home has one.
  • Go after a fresh snowfall. With natural snow only, conditions change quickly.
  • Don't sled on roadsides or on private driveways. Many streets in Incline are steep, and cars and plows use them.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

Tahoe Meadows

Tahoe Meadows is the main snowshoe and cross-country spot near Incline. Visit Reno Tahoe describes it as just west of Mt. Rose Summit, mostly on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It is free, and you park along the highway. The same source says it is under 20 minutes from Incline Village. Watch for chain controls on the way up.

The easiest route is the Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail, a loop of about 1.3 miles that the Forest Service lists for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. It is a good first outing for families and beginners.

Chickadee Ridge

Chickadee Ridge is in the same area, and Visit Reno Tahoe puts it under 20 minutes from Incline too. It is named for its chickadees. Please watch them rather than feed them.

The East Shore Trail in snow

The paved Tahoe East Shore Trail between Incline and Sand Harbor is beautiful in winter, but not reliably cleared. In February 2026, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported that Travel North Tahoe Nevada was paying for snow removal at the trail's parking lot, and that Nevada State Parks may not clear the trail itself in winter. Expect snow and ice on the path after a storm. Boots with good grip, or traction devices, help.

Sand Harbor in winter

Sand Harbor is a summer beach that is also worth visiting in winter. Nevada State Parks keeps the lots clear, and the visitor center is open year-round. As of 2026 the entry fee is $10 for Nevada vehicles and $15 for non-Nevada vehicles.

Winter is also when dogs are allowed. The park permits pets only from October 15 to April 15. Our homes don't take pets, but if you're visiting with local friends and their dog, winter is the time to go.

Go on a still morning after a storm, when there is snow on the shore and the water is calm. There are far fewer people than in summer, and you won't be fighting for a parking spot.

Indoor and stormy-day options

Some winter days are for staying off the roads. When a storm closes the highway or the lifts are on wind hold, you can stay in town.

IVGID Recreation Center

The Incline Village Recreation Center, at 980 Incline Way, has a 25-yard, eight-lane indoor pool, a sauna and a gym. It is open to the public with daily rates, so you don't need to be a resident. It's a good way to wear out kids on a snow day. Check the site for hours and current prices.

At the house

On a storm day, a lot of the fun is the house itself: a fire going, a movie, a long dinner, and the hot tub while it snows. If that's the trip you want, filter for it:

Pick your dates on our site to see the direct price. It is lower than the same home on Airbnb (28% higher there) or Vrbo (17% higher), and each home page shows the dollar saving for your dates.

Driving in Incline Village in winter

Most winter trouble at Tahoe starts on the road. Here is what you need to know on the Nevada side.

The Mt. Rose Highway (NV-431)

If you're flying into Reno, the Mt. Rose Highway is the direct road to Incline. According to Nevada State Route 431's record, it runs 24.4 miles between Incline Village and Reno and crosses Mt. Rose Summit at 8,911 feet. That's a high pass, and conditions at the top can be very different from those in Reno or at the lake. If you're driving from California, see driving to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area.

Chain controls

  • Nevada law: when traction controls are posted, you must follow them. See NRS 484D.515.
  • The Tahoe-area rule: since November 2018, on the Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade and US-50, chains are required under chain controls unless your vehicle is 4WD or AWD and has snow tires, according to News 4. AWD without snow tires is not enough.
  • Towing: vehicles towing a trailer must chain.

Snow tires and studs

  • NDOT's older winter-driving brochure (2007) describes snow tires as those marked M+S with at least 3/16 inch of tread.
  • Studded tires are allowed from October 1 to April 30.
  • Rental cars may come with all-season tires. Ask the rental company what's on the car, and carry chains if you're unsure.

Check before you drive

Look at nvroads.com or dial 511 before you leave, and again before you head up the pass. Leave extra time on storm days. The road may be open but slow.

Steep driveways

Incline Village is built on a hillside. Several of our homes have steep driveways, and each home page says when you'll need 4WD. Read that note before you book a winter stay, and match the home to the car you'll be driving.

Winter street parking in Incline Village and Crystal Bay

Winter parking catches out many visitors. Washoe County runs a winter parking program for Incline Village and Crystal Bay:

  • Restrictions start October 1.
  • Green days: street parking is allowed.
  • Red days: street parking is illegal.
  • How to check: call the hotline at 775-833-5555, or use the county's online map.
  • After a storm, restrictions stay in place until snow and ice have been removed.

The reason is snowplows. A car on the street in a storm blocks the plow for everyone. Check the status every day of your stay, not just when you arrive. If you have questions about parking at your home, ask us before you arrive.

Planning a winter week in Incline Village

Here is one way to put the pieces together, using only the places in this guide. Move the days around to fit the snow.

  • Arrival day: check nvroads.com before you leave Reno or the Bay Area, and time the drive over the pass for daylight. When you arrive, check whether it's a green or red parking day.
  • Ski days: Diamond Peak in town, with free general parking and the Blue and Green shuttles, or Mt. Rose up the highway on a clear day. First-timers can try the longer beginner lessons Diamond Peak has added for 2026-27.
  • A rest day: snowshoe the 1.3-mile interpretive loop at Tahoe Meadows in the morning, then swim at the Rec Center in the afternoon.
  • A lake day: Sand Harbor's cleared lots and year-round visitor center, or a careful walk on the East Shore Trail if it isn't icy.
  • Fresh snow: bring your sled to the driving range at 955 Fairway Blvd.
  • Storm day: stay off the pass, stay in town, light the fire.

Build in some slack. With about 26 inches of precipitation a year, most of it snow between November and April, there will be days when the best plan is to wait for the plows.
