In short

Reno-Tahoe International (RNO) is the closest major airport to North Lake Tahoe, roughly 45 minutes by car. Rent a car there, or book the North Lake Tahoe Express.

The short answer: fly into Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). It's the closest major airport to North Lake Tahoe, and Visit Reno Tahoe puts the North Shore about 45 minutes away by car. Rent a car in the terminal and drive the Mount Rose Highway to Incline Village and Crystal Bay, or I-80 through Truckee to Kings Beach, Tahoe City and the West Shore. If you'd rather not drive, the North Lake Tahoe Express shuttle leaves from outside Door D and stops in every town where we have homes. As of 2026 it costs $85 one way per person, and you have to book at least 24 hours ahead.

Below: why Reno beats the alternatives, the route to each town, renting a car, the shuttle, rideshare, getting around without a car, and what changes in winter.

Why fly into Reno

Reno is the closest big airport to the North Shore, and it has more flights than most people expect. As of 2026, the airport advertises "10 Airlines. 130+ Daily Arrivals and Departures. 20+ Nonstop Destinations."

Nonstop destinations on its list include Atlanta (ATL), Austin (AUS), Burbank (BUR), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Denver (DEN), Guadalajara (GDL), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), Nashville (BNA, Southwest, starting October 2026), New York JFK (seasonal), Phoenix (PHX), Portland (PDX), Salt Lake City (SLC), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC) and Seattle (SEA). Routes change every year, so check the airport's nonstop destinations page before you book.

From the Bay Area, only SFO and SJC appear on that list as of 2026. There is no Oakland or Sacramento route. For most Bay Area guests driving is the more direct option anyway; see driving to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area.

Reno vs Sacramento vs the Bay Area airports

AirportDistance to North Lake TahoeDrive timeWorth knowing
Reno-Tahoe (RNO)About 35 milesAbout 45 minutesClosest. Rental cars in the terminal, airport shuttle to the lake towns.
Sacramento (SMF)About 120 milesAbout 2 hoursYou then drive I-80 over Donner Summit, with the same chain controls as Bay Area drivers.
San Francisco (SFO)About 200 milesAbout 3.5 to 4 hoursOnly makes sense if the flight is much cheaper or you're also visiting the city.

Distances and times are from East West. They're estimates for good conditions, so check your map app for your exact town. In winter, the gap gets wider: Reno avoids the Donner Summit crossing, while Sacramento and SFO don't.

From RNO to your town

There are two ways from the airport to the lake. The Mount Rose Highway (NV-431) climbs straight over the mountains to Incline Village. I-80 runs west through the Truckee River canyon to Truckee, where CA-267 and CA-89 drop to the California side of the North Shore.

For Kings Beach and its neighbors, Mount Rose and then west along the shore also works in clear weather. Your map app will pick whichever is faster that day. Beyond "roughly 45 minutes" to the North Shore, we won't quote a time for every town, because traffic and weather change it too much. Check your map app before you leave the airport.

The Mount Rose Highway

NV-431 runs 24.4 miles between Incline Village and Reno and crosses the Mount Rose Summit at 8,911 feet. NDOT calls it the highest summit open year-round in the Sierra Nevada. "Open year-round" doesn't mean easy year-round: in storms, NDOT puts chain controls on SR-431. Check nvroads.com before you start the climb. Tahoe.com describes the US-395 to Mount Rose route as about 45 minutes in normal conditions.

I-80 through Truckee

I-80 west from Reno is the way to Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay, Tahoe City and the West Shore, and the usual alternative when Mount Rose is under chain controls. From Truckee, the roads are the same as for Bay Area drivers. Our Bay Area driving guide covers CA-267, CA-89 and chain controls in detail.

Choose your home by your route. If you're flying in and driving the Mount Rose Highway, Incline Village is the first town you reach and has the most of our homes. If you'd rather take I-80 and avoid the summit, Kings Beach and Tahoe City are where CA-267 and CA-89 reach the lake. See all our North Lake Tahoe towns.

Renting a car at Reno airport

For most stays, a car is the easy option. Our homes are spread along the shore, and groceries, trailheads and ski areas are all a drive away.

At RNO, rental counters are in baggage claim, and you pick up the car in the adjacent parking garage. Visit Reno Tahoe says the rental cars are about a 200-foot walk. As of 2026 the companies are:

  • Alamo
  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Dollar
  • Enterprise
  • Hertz
  • National
  • Reno-Tahoe Rental Car
  • Sixt (off-site, reached by shuttle)
  • Thrifty

Winter rentals

Visit Reno Tahoe recommends a four-wheel drive with snow tires in winter. When you book, request AWD or 4WD with snow-rated tires, then confirm what you've actually got at the counter before you drive off. A request isn't a guarantee, and the difference matters. Under California's R-2 chain control, a 4WD or AWD vehicle with snow-tread tires on all four wheels can keep going without chains on, and most others can't. The full rules are in our driving guide.

Your home matters too. Several of our homes have steep driveways, and each home's page says when 4WD is needed. Read it before you choose a car class.

Coming in 2028

The airport has broken ground on a $299 million Ground Transportation Center and Consolidated Rental Car Facility, expected in 2028. Until then, it's the counters in baggage claim and the garage next door.

The North Lake Tahoe Express shuttle

If you don't want to drive, the North Lake Tahoe Express is a shared shuttle from RNO to the North Shore towns. According to its 2026 schedule, it runs year-round, costs $85 one way per person, and stops only where a seat is reserved. It's funded by Placer County, Travel North Tahoe Nevada, the Town of Truckee and Washoe County.

Times are from the July 2026 schedule PDF. Check the current version before you book, and use the same schedule for pickups from your town back to the airport.

Which route goes to your home? Staying in Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista or Carnelian Bay? That's the Blue route, and 34 of our homes are on it. Staying in Tahoe City, Homewood or Tahoma? That's the Red route. The Green route serves Truckee and Northstar, where we don't have homes. Find a home on your route, then book the seat.

How booking works

  • Book at least 24 hours ahead online or at (833) 709-8080. The shuttle stops only where it has a reservation.
  • Leave a cushion after landing. The schedule says to book a pickup at least 30 minutes after your flight arrives.
  • Find it outside Door D at the terminal.
  • If your flight is delayed, you're moved to the next available shuttle, per the shuttle's FAQ.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours ahead, or you'll be charged.
  • Bring your own car seats.
  • Service animals only. The shuttle doesn't carry pets.

A practical note on the last departures: Blue's latest airport departure on the 2026 schedule is 7:30 pm and Red's is 12:00 am. If you land in the evening on a route with an early last run, rent a car or book a flight that lands earlier.

Uber, Lyft and taxis

According to the airport's ground transportation page, Uber and Lyft pick up at the ground transportation loop outside baggage claim Door D, and taxis wait outside the D doors. That gets you from the terminal to the lake. For the trip back to the airport, plan it before you arrive instead of counting on booking a ride from the lake on the day. The Express, with its reservation, is the predictable option.

Getting around without a car

Arriving without a car works better in some towns than others.

  • TART buses are free. Placer County says TART fixed routes are free through the end of 2027.
  • TART Connect is free on-demand microtransit from 8 am to 10 pm in the West Shore, Tahoe City, Dollar Hill, Carnelian Bay, Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach. You book it in the app or at (530) 553-0653.
  • TART Connect doesn't serve Incline Village or Crystal Bay. If you're staying in one of our 21 Nevada-side homes without a car, check how you'll get to groceries and the beach before you arrive.
  • The Express connects with TART at the Tahoe City Transit Center, the Truckee Depot and Northstar, per TART.

The Amtrak California Zephyr also stops at Reno and Truckee, which is useful if part of your group is coming by train.

Your arrival day, step by step

Here's how the day goes, whichever way you're getting to the lake:

  1. Before you fly: book the shuttle if you're taking it (at least 24 hours ahead, with a pickup at least 30 minutes after your scheduled landing). If you're renting a car, reserve it, ask for AWD or 4WD with snow-rated tires in winter, and read your home's page for driveway and 4WD notes.
  2. On landing: collect your bags in baggage claim. The rental counters are there too.
  3. Driving: walk to the adjacent garage for your car (Sixt customers take the shuttle to its off-site lot). Before you pull out, check nvroads.com and QuickMap and choose Mount Rose or I-80.
  4. Shuttle: go out Door D to the North Lake Tahoe Express pickup. If your flight ran late, you'll be on the next available shuttle.
  5. Rideshare or taxi: also out Door D, to the ground transportation loop or the taxi line.
  6. At the lake: on the California side, TART Connect covers short hops from 8 am to 10 pm. In Incline Village and Crystal Bay it doesn't, so plan around having a car there.

With a car, the drive itself is roughly 45 minutes on a clear day, so allow extra for bags and the garage on top of that. With the shuttle, add the wait for your departure time and any stops before yours. Either way, it's a short trip compared with driving from Sacramento or the Bay Area, and it skips Donner Summit entirely if you take Mount Rose.

Winter flying tips

  • Check the roads before you leave the airport. Look at nvroads.com for the Mount Rose Highway and NV-28, and Caltrans QuickMap for I-80, CA-267 and CA-89.
  • Decide on Mount Rose or I-80 at the airport, not at the bottom of the hill. If Mount Rose has chain controls, I-80 to Truckee is the other way around.
  • Ask for AWD or 4WD with snow-rated tires and check what you've got before leaving the garage.
  • Know your chain rules. Nevada posts requirements on nvroads.com. California's R-1, R-2 and R-3 are explained in our driving guide.
  • If you're taking the shuttle, book the seat when you book the flight. Leave the 30-minute cushion, and remember a delayed flight moves you to the next shuttle.
  • Read your home's page. Steep driveways and 4WD notes are there.

For the season itself, see Lake Tahoe in winter and Incline Village in winter. If you're choosing between the two nearest ski areas to Incline, Mt. Rose vs Diamond Peak compares them.

Where to stay

We manage 41 homes, all on the North and West Shore: Incline Village (20), Kings Beach (6), Carnelian Bay (5), Homewood (3), Tahoe City (2), Tahoe Vista (2), Tahoma (2) and Crystal Bay (1). We have no homes in South Lake Tahoe.

Our one lakefront home is Lakeside Luxe Retreat in Kings Beach, on the Blue route. None of our homes are ski-in/ski-out. For a ski trip, start with ski cabin rentals, and if you're flying in a big group, see rentals for large groups.

Book on our site rather than an app. Our Airbnb prices are set 28% above our own site's (Vrbo 17%), and each home page shows the saving for your dates. The comparison is in booking direct vs Airbnb.

Booked your flight? Search our homes by your dates, then pick the route (Mount Rose, I-80 or the Blue or Red shuttle) that gets you there.
